Well Hello there-
It's been way too long since we last updated this blog and we apologize completely, but don't fret "people who read this blog" here is our opinion on the Holiday movies that are out now!
The Darkest Hour - (PG-13) Directed by: Chris Gorak Starring: Emile Hirsch and Olivia Thirlby
This is the holiday movie for people who just like to see things explode. Starring Emile Hirsch and produced by the usually awesome Tiumur Bekmambetov this movie sadly has a dismal 18% on Rotten Tomatoes. Set in Moscow during an alien attack, This is recommended only to the biggest of alien movie fans. Wait for it on DVD.
Extremely Loud & Incredibly Close - (PG-13) Limited Release Directed by: Stephen Daldry Starring: Thomas Horn, Tom Hanks, Sandra Bullock, Max Von Sydow, and Viola Davis
Based on the book by Jonathan Safran Foer, this is drama about a kid who believes his father (Tom Hanks), who died during the 9/11 World Trade Center attack, has left him a message. The kid then goes on a journey searching for said message. The film has kind of mixed reviews, but if you are the dramatic sort I say go for it and see it in theaters, even if the main kid seems annoying. For those who don't live in the city this movie will be getting a Wide Release on January 20th.
We Bought A Zoo - (PG) Directed by: Cameron Crowe Starring: Matt Damon, Thomas Haden Church, Scarlett Johansson, and Patrick Fugit
A family film by the man who brought us films such as Jerry Maguire, Elizabethtown (It's listed because it's a good freakin' movie), and Almost Famous. This film is exactly what it sounds like, Matt Damon and family buying a zoo. If you are in to schmaltzy family drama stuff this is a good movie to see.
In the Land of Blood and Honey - (R) Limited Release Directed by: Angelina Jolie Starring: A whole lotta foreign people.
This is Angelina Jolie trying to prove she is smart and can do more than just be a hot actress, but judging by the reviews and my personal dislike of the woman I recommend skipping this film set during the Bosnian War.
War Horse - (PG-13) Directed by: Steven Spielberg Starring: War Horse, Jeremy Irvine, David Thewlis, Emily Watson, and Tom Hiddleston
This is a movie about a horse, but not just any horse, a super magical, awesome WAR HORSE. The film follows this horse through it's crazy journey and multiple owners during World War I. The world will never know why, but movies about horses tend to be better than movies without them. If you love Spielberg movies, meaning if you have a heart, go see it in theaters.
Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol - (PG-13) Directed by: Brad Bird Starring: Tom Cruise, Simon Pegg, Jeremy Renner, Ving Rhames, Paula Patton, and Josh Holloway
This is the action movie of Christmas. It has cartoonishly awesome action directed by the man who made The Iron Giant and The Incredibles and stars Simon Pegg, you should be in line to buy a ticket for this right now. This movie is very good even if the acting isn't always solid. It is the best action movie of the year. Go see it in theaters.
The Adventures of Tintin - (PG) Directed by: Steven Spielberg Starring: Jamie Bell, Andy Serkis, Daniel Craig, Nick Frost, Simon Pegg, and Toby Jones
Supposedly some of the coolest animation ever made using motion capture technology. If you like Spielberg and action/adventure stories you'll probably enjoy this movie the most out of any of the Holiday Movies. Yes, Tintin does look creepy but you should go see it, it's a shoe-in for at least an Oscar nomination.
Albert Nobbs - (R) Directed by: Rodrigo Garcia Starring: Glenn Close, Mia Wasikowska, and Brendan Gleeson Aaron Johnson, Jonathan Rhys Meyers
If you like the idea of Glenn Close dressing like a man in 19th century Ireland, and doing other manly things like wearing top hats and dating women then see this. If you don't, then you are like every other person, skip this movie.
The Flowers of War - (R) Limited Release Directed by: Yimou Zhang Starring: Christian Bale, and a lot of people who aren't.
Judging by the reviews...this may be the world's first bad Christian Bale movie, but judging by the The Dark Knight Rises trailer... I think we will all be okay. It's about war in China in 1937. It has Christian Bale, rent it when it comes out and give it a shot.
The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo - (R) Directed by: David Fincher Starring: Daniel Craig, Rooney Mara, Stellan Skarsgard, and Christopher Plummer
Based off of the best selling novel by Stieg Larsson and a remake of the 2009 Swedish film, this is an extremely disturbing story about a 40 year old unsolved murder. This is one of those movies that everyone should see once, but it probably wouldn't be good for their mental health to see again. Lots of blood and rape...but also some of the best acting of 2011. Daniel Craig is especially good here. If you aren't shaken easily by movies you'll enjoy this movie. See it in theaters.
Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows - (PG-13) Directed by: Guy Ritchie Starring: Robert Downey Jr, Jude Law, Rachel McAdams, Jared Harris, Noomi Rapace, and Stephen Fry
Fans of the first film should love this sequel which pitches Sherlock Holmes against his greatest rival Professor James Moriarty. It's got action, mystery, and the always very funny Stephen Fry. Holmes fans will be pleased, see it in theaters.
Alvin and the Chipmunks: Chipwrecked - (G) Directed by: Mike Mitchell Starring: Jason Lee, Justin Long, Anna Faris, Amy Poehler, Matthew Gray Gubler, Jesse McCartney, and Christina Applegate
The world will never know why these movies are still being made, but they are and judging by the 13% Rotten Tomatoes rating...few will enjoy it. We'll just pray to God that there isn't a fourth one. I think the title should give a pretty good indication of whether you should see this or not.
Young Adult - (R) Directed by: Jason Reitman Starring: Charlize Theron, Patrick Wilson, Patton Oswalt
Another Jason Reitman/Diablo Cody movie. I loved Juno, United States of Tara was awesome and every Reitman movie made has been good, but this was a disappointment with no real happy ending for anyone involved in the movie. Rent it when it's out on DVD.
Carnage - (R) Limited Release Directed by: Roman Polanski Starring: John C. Reilly, Christoph Waltz, Kate Winslet, Jodie Foster
Four parents trying to figure out what happened between their kids at school. Its smart, funny and well written by Roman Polanski. Not really one you need to see on the big screen. Wait and Rent it.
